The skin on the legs is thicker and harder so the UV light from sunbeds cannot easily penetrate it. The skin is also dryer, resulting in quicker exfoliation of the outermost layers. What is more, dry skin usually reflects the UV light, making the whole tanning process less effective.
Leg tanning lotions contain more DHA or Tyrosine and moisturising ingredients, to more efficiently create tan on legs. Some of them have an additional 'tingle' effect to stimulate blood circulation.
Facial tanning is not easy either. Frequent washing, abrasion, makeup and facial creams with UV filters make it difficult to tan it. In addition, facial skin needs more care and delicate ingredients because it is more prone to irritation.
Facial tanning creams have additional moisturising, anti-wrinkle and antioxidant ingredients to provide better skincare while tanning.
